WORLD WAR?

Guardian columnist Simon Tisdall has stated that Europe should go to war with Russia, arguing that Putin is already at de facto war with Europe and that he has the potential to destabilise both the EU and the European continent itself:

Freezing pensioners, hungry children, empty supermarket shelves, unaffordable cost of living increases, devalued wages, strikes and street protests point to Sri Lanka-style meltdowns. An exaggeration? Not really. Blowback, fanned by the Putin-admiring far right, is already gathering strength in Greece and Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.

In prospect, too, is a shattering of EU solidarity as national governments compete for scarce resources. Brussels is due to publish a “winter preparedness plan” this week. But its provisions are unclear and unenforceable. The broader context is lack of an agreed, implemented EU-wide energy policy.

It sould also be noted that Tisdall has previous form in calling for ‘regime change’ :

Remember too, should what Tisdall advocates actually happen and there is European military action against Russia it’s highly likely that the US will quickly become involved.

This is a dangerous suggestion by Tisdall. It smacks of irresponsible jingoism and the Guardian should publish it’s own opinion piece on the article making its own position clear.

  1. Interesting hughie,

I think most likely a ceasefire will come after Putin has taken the donbas and luhansk provinces
which he’s already effectively annexed and recognises as independant

but it will be Putin buying time to replenish forces
The best that going to happen imho is Ukraine push the Russian forces back to the edge of those
provinces , and the west help hold the line for another 7 years

I don’t think Putin has the money or troops to take much more of Ukraine

its a terrible event that is going on , esp the slaughter of innocents

  2. I suspect that the war will finish with the ceding of Donbas to Russia however it’ll be a pyrrhic victory for Russia as I suspect it will mean enhanced entry for Ukraine to the EU and Russia will have NATO members Finland and Ukraine on its doorstep and NATO member Sweden across the Baltic.

    1. Concur.

Russia will control Donbas and Crimea.

A savage war of aggression will give Russia these things, but, as noted, at the cost of Russia well outside of Europe and the West, a Russia one step closer to a vassal state to China, deep structural damage to the Russian economy.

The west has made errors as respect Russia, but Putin, no one else, has shoved a dagger into Russia’s belly.

  3. agreed, its moving that way , but Ukraine won’t cede donbas and luhansk formally
I can’t imagine that after all that’s gone on
but i supose not cedeing means very little except keeping a bit of pride
when they will have lost that territory

I can see Russian offering a ceasfire after they have run too low on supplies

all the outcomes are pretty horrible though .. except the points you made

NATO stronger , EU fast track for Ukraine

That will count in 20 years , more that the BS Putin is putting Ukraine and the world through

  4. Any outcome leaving Russia in control of any parts of E. Ukraine would be rewarding military aggression, murder of civilians, ethnic cleansing and a blatant breach of international law. No country, no decent world, can be expected to tolerate that, no more than we could tolerate Israeli annexation of Palestine.

If it comes to war with Russia, than so be it. Russia will have started it, just as Hitler started a global conflict by invading Poland.
Besides, the big issues facing the world right now – climate change is the most drastic, as the current events in S Europe and temperatures due tomorrow will show even to the thickest amongst us – cannot be tackled when there are large countries prepared to unleash war and massacre thousands of civilians and disregard all international agreements and laws.
    Putin has to go.

  5. I think you are probablt correct Noel
I just don’t see the appetitie for it
Biden can just about pass some bills to give aid in arms
that will all disappear should Reps win the mid-terms

In the EU there is a committment to assist Ukraine
    financially, politically , militarily
but when the gas is cut off , combined with rising prices, inflation
not to mention the no:1 climate change
these western democracies have to answer to their populations
    at the ballot box
the far right see an opportunity here to destabalise the west

A better way might be a European army , that the council /parliament
votes to go to war with Russia, with NATO
that way its a collective decsion and individiual countries
won’t face so much backlash at the polls

But we do tolerate the annexation of Palestine, Noel.

I think all you’ve said above is broadly correct. I also suspect that what I have hypothesised above is the most likely 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒌 outcome to avoid all-out war.

    ‘Putin has to go’

I think most sane people would agree. The problem is the manner in which he should go.

‘A better way might be a European army’

You mean there is no European Army? 😉

Of course the problem with a Euro Army is the official neutrality stance of some EU Member states. I’ve suggested that this might be overcome by the creation of a European Defence Force controlled centrally by the Euro Parliament and comprised of volunteer professional soldiers of various EU nations.

  7. ‘So your good idea of a defense force would mean vol professionals
could join who are not in NATO’

It would mean nationals from the currently official neutral countries of the EU, Austria, Ireland, Finland, Malta and Sweden could join a centrally controlled Euro Defence Force separate from NATO.

  8. //But we do tolerate the annexation of Palestine, Noel. //

Nope. According to the UN, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is illegal. Several western countries have recognised Palestine and Ireland will probably soon follow. It is only the US – with the Congress being the true Israeli occupied territories, as some Irish-American politician (Moynahan ?) once remarked- that prevents sanctions against Israel and further recognition of Palestine, but at least under Biden the US has again stated that Palestinians must have their own country.

//The problem is the manner in which he should go.//

The best way would be a von-Stauffenberg solution, but one that worked this time. There must be someone in the Russian military that realises the mess P is making of their country and who has the balls to stop him.
Other than that, assassination. Use of some nerve agent would be appropriate poetic justice.

    1. ‘Nope. According to the UN, the Israeli occupation of Palestine is illegal’

Indeed it is, the same UN and the same Israel that has absolutely ignored some 45 UN resolutions against it which has resulted in little or no concrete censure or rebuke.

‘Several western countries have recognised Palestine’

Indeed they have. How many of them have used diplomatic measures against Israel in the wake of Israeli Government sanctioned atrocities?

I speak about 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒑𝒐𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒌 above, in practical terms the annexation of Palestine is absolutely tolerated.

‘There must be someone in the Russian military that realises the mess P is making of their country and who has the balls to stop him’

I would hope that you’re correct.
